This online course is designed to give the funeral professional a renewed awareness of the importance of personnel management in the funeral industry along with the basic skills needed to coordinate, motivate, and manage the staff of a funeral business. The author provides guidelines about how to formulate, implement, and control an effective personnel policy, taking into account generational differences, motivating factors, and the future, and addresses the development of a Manual of Policies and Practices.

Vanderlyn R. Pine, Ph.D., C.B.A.
Dr. Pine entered funeral service in 1957, graduated from the American Academy of Funeral Service in 1959, and assumed the management of his family's funeral home. In 1970, Dr. Pine was appointed as the Management Consultant for the National Funeral Directors Association, a position he held until 1985. Also in 1970, he became a college professor with special expertise in Sociological Research Methods, Statistical Analysis, and the Sociology of Death.
Dr. Pine began publishing articles on funeral home evaluation and financial management in the early 1970s in the American Funeral Director and NFDA's The Director. Over the years he authored, edited, and contributed to a number of books on funeral service, and gave hundreds of featured speeches, lectures, and seminars on funeral home evaluation, management, pricing, mergers and consolidation, and other related subjects for numerous funeral director associations and groups in the United States and Canada.
Dr. Pine is the former owner of American Funeral Consultants (AFC) which specializes in areas such as: Succession Planning; Buy/Sell Intermediary Services; Funeral Business Appraisals; Minority Stock Assessments; Business Plans, Feasibility and Trend Studies, Estate Planning & Analysis; and general consulting services. Dr. Pine currently serves as Consultant Emeritus to AFC, and he and his long-time associates and current AFC owners, Kathy Williams and Melissa Drake, have helped many hundreds of funeral business owners and their management and staff throughout the United States and Canada achieve their business goals.
